Formal verification

Machine-checked proofs that a neural network, a program or AI-generated code satisfies a precise specification for every input in its scope.

Anyone who trusts the proof checker, such as a proof assistant or verifier, can confirm that a property holds for every input in scope. They do not need to rely on the person or AI that wrote the proof. In AI, the evidence takes three forms. Proofs about neural networks can show a property such as robustness over a region of inputs. Machine-checked proofs can show that AI-generated code meets its specification. In the guaranteed-safe AI proposal, a verifier issues a proof certificate relative to a safety specification and a world model of how the system affects its environment. A proof establishes only that the system meets its specification, so errors or gaps in the specification carry over into the guarantee. Verification at the scale of whole repositories also remains difficult for current AI agents.

Math, Inc. Says Its Gauss AI Completed the Lean Formalization of Viazovska's Sphere-Packing Proofs

Math, Inc. said in March 2026 that its AI system Gauss had finished the Lean formalization of Maryna Viazovska's Fields Medal-winning sphere-packing proofs for dimensions 8 and 24. A human-written blueprint guided the dimension-8 work, but the dimension-24 case had none, so its formal statements most need independent review.
